Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Adding 120 or 35mm color or black and white film to your photo session brings a timeless, authentic feel to your images that digital often can’t replicate. Film captures light and color with a unique depth and warmth, giving your portraits a rich, organic texture. Black and white film emphasizes emotion and contrast, creating classic, striking photographs that stand out. Whether you choose 120 for its larger format and incredible detail or 35mm for a more candid, vintage vibe, incorporating film adds an artistic, nostalgic layer to your memories, making your session truly one-of-a-kind.

  • Choosing between 120 and 35mm film depends on the look and detail you want in your photos. 120 film, also called medium format, produces larger images with higher resolution, richer colors, and more depth—perfect for capturing fine details in portraits and family photos. 35mm film is smaller, more versatile, and great for a classic, candid feel with a bit of grain that adds character. If you want sharp, detailed images with a professional finish, go with 120 film. If you prefer a more spontaneous, vintage vibe that’s easier to shoot in various settings, 35mm is the way to go.

  • The sessions I would recommend considering adding film to would be those milestone sessions. Capturing your engagement on a timeless medium of black and white film. Capturing your growing family on 35mm color film during those summer months. And doing the combination of color and black and white film for those timeless senior sessions. Getting those film scans back from the developer and seeing the images for the first time in a world of instant gratification with digital makes it worth the investment.

  • No - we do not do any retouching to the film scans we receive back from the developer. The beauty of film is the raw capture of the moment. The way you see the image is the way it was captured.

Prior to RDBloomfield Photography receiving the scans back, the developer will have already gone through and made any adjustments to the scans to remove scratches and dust and make sure the image is the best quality it can be.

  • With the advent of digital cameras and smartphones since the early 2000s the medium of film photography has become increasing expensive. There is not only the cost of the roll of film itself, but then the cost of development and scanning as well as the cost of shipping between these locations.
