Lake Erie Shores & Islands - Memorial Day Weekend

The morning of May 23rd brought in dense fog over the Western Basin of Lake Erie. This made for a great opportunity to go capture Marblehead Lighthouse and Johnson’s Island Confederate Cemetery.

Marblehead Lighthouse has been guiding sailors around the point of Marblehead Peninsula since it’s erection in 1821. More information on the oldest continuous lighthouse in operation on the Great Lakes can be found here: Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society

Johnson’s Island served as a “Depot of Prisoners of War” during the Civil War - today there is a well maintained cemetery open to the public. Today there are 206 graves marked with headstones - but the exact number of Confederate Soldiers buried there and where they are buried is not known. More information on Johnson’s Island and its role as a military prison depot can be found here: Johnson’s Island Preservation Society

Later on in the day, once the fog had cleared out the family went out for the first boat ride of the year and I was able to capture the first of the year photos of the attractions on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) and the transportation methods to get to the island.

Check back for more stories from the Lake Erie Shores and Islands as the summer goes on.
